This Sacrament has many names. It is called Reconciliation because it reconciles us to God and to other people. Sometimes it is called confession because we verbally confess our sins to a priest. It is called penance from the Latin word penitentia which means conversion. This Sacrament is all about conversion toward God.
On the day that He rose from the dead, Jesus Christ gave His apostles the power and the duty to forgive sins in His name. He “breathed on them and said to them, ‘receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.’” – John 20:22-23
Through this Sacrament, we receive forgiveness for our sins. Our offenses are committed against God, and through this Sacrament, we receive His mercy. Moreover, we are reconciled to the Church because our sins wound the Church. All sin is personal but no sin is private. Regularly receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation aids us to turn away from sin and grow in virtue. The grace of this Sacrament strengthens us to be the Catholics we are called to be.
