We believe that God has freely revealed Himself to us in Jesus: “In times past, God spoke in partial and various ways to our ancestors through the prophets; in these last days, he spoke to us through a son.” – Hebrews 1:1-2. God has fully revealed His plan by sending us His beloved Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit.
This revelation is communicated to us in two ways: Sacred Scripture (the Bible) and Sacred Tradition. The Church is entrusted with this revelation and interprets revelation for the good of all humanity.
The basic beliefs of the Catholic Church can be described as such:
God freely created the universe and called it good. Creation reflects the goodness of the Creator. The capstone of creation is the human person who is made in the image and likeness of God.
After the sin of Adam and Eve (Genesis 3) there is a fundamental brokenness in humanity and in creation. St. Paul describes this brokenness as follows: “For I do not do what I want, but I do what I hate.” We have a propensity to sin against God, others, and ourselves. The Old Testament is full of failures to love God and love neighbor.
In the fullness of time, God sent his own Divine Son, Jesus Christ. Jesus is true God and true Man. During the course of His earthly life He proclaimed the Kingdom of God, taught, and cured the sick. He was crucified by Pontius Pilate and descended into Hell. Three days later Jesus rose from the dead in His Resurrection and later Ascended into heaven. His victory over sin and death prepares the way for our salvation.
The saving action of Jesus Christ affects our lives. He sends the Holy Spirit into our hearts to teach us how to love God and our neighbors. He invites us to be His disciples. We are joined to Jesus Christ and worship Him through the Seven Sacraments of the Church: Baptism, Confirmation, the Eucharist, Reconciliation, Anointing of the Sick, Holy Orders, Marriage.
Jesus promises that at the end of time He will return to pronounce His final judgment upon all evil. He promises eternal life for His faithful ones.
