IMMACULATE CONCEPTION • ST. JOHN • ST. JOSEPH • ST. LAWRENCE
There is a lot of pain and sadness associated with a failed relationship. It can be a very difficult and lonely situation. One way that we walk with people in the aftermath of this process is through an annulment or, better called, a declaration of nullity.
Declarations of nullity exist because we take Jesus’ words seriously. Jesus says, “I say to you, whoever divorces his wife (unless the marriage is unlawful) and marries another commits adultery” (Matthew 19:9). He exclaims, “What God has joined together, man must not separate” (Matthew 19:6).
If someone has already attempted marriage, been civilly divorced, and would like to marry again, they go through a declaration of nullity. Jesus says marrying a second time isn’t possible. A declaration of nullity means looking at a previous marriage to see if it was, as Jesus says, unlawful. We ask questions such as: was there something amiss when they went through marriage vows? Is there a reason an honest, true marriage didn’t occur? A declaration isn’t simply a “Catholic divorce.” It is following the Lord’s instruction about marriage and the possibility of marrying again.
If you or someone you know would like to inquire about a declaration of nullity, we are more than happy to walk you through the process. Please give us a call at (419)-738-2115.
