Confirmation

ConfirmationAfter Jesus Christ ascended into heaven, the Apostles gathered in the upper room for ten days of prayer. On the tenth day: “And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which they were. Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim.” – Acts of the Apostles 2:2-4

The Sacrament of Confirmation completes Baptism by bonding the individual more perfectly to the Church and enriching him/her with the strength of the Holy Spirit. They are given the grace to witness to the faith by word and example. Just as the Holy Spirit emboldened the first Apostles to spread the Christian faith, the Sacrament of Confirmation emboldens Catholics to witness to the love and truth of Jesus Christ in the world.

Concerning Sponsors

One of the blessings of Confirmation is that you get to select a sponsor. This person serves as a mentor in faith. More than being a friend, family member, or good person, they should be filled with the love of God and dedicated to the Catholic way of life. An ideal sponsor is someone who prays daily, worships God weekly at Mass, is generous, and will support and encourage the candidate in their faith.

There are two minimum requirements for a Catholic sponsor. These requirements are: 1) The Catholic must be confirmed. 2) If the Catholic is married, they must be married in the Church. These minimum requirements can’t be altered or dispensed. We simply ask your honesty in these matters.

If you are struggling to decide on a sponsor, implore the Lord’s assistance. May the Holy Spirit reveal to you who God has planned to serve in this role.
